Detective Chief Inspector Alistair Reid

The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) is currently headed by Detective Chief Inspector Alistair Reid.

He is assisted by a Detective Inspector and five Detective Sergeants.

The CID is responsible for the investigation of a diverse range of crimes across the Angus area. Detective Officers are based both in Forfar and Arbroath. The Family Protection Unit, Domestic Violence Unit, Sex Offender Registration Officer and Crime Management Unit are incorporated within the CID.

The types of crimes to be investigated are varied and can range from crimes of violence, such as murder, to complex crimes of fraud. The CID also has an important role to play in line with the Tayside Police Force Objectives, with significant effort dedicated to preventing and detecting vehicle crime and crimes of housebreaking.

The work of the CID is very much in line with the National Intelligence Model and is supported by the Intelligence and Crime Management Unit. Personnel within the Unit, including Crime Intelligence Analysts, regularly research and review crimes and intelligence. That information is used by Detective Officers thus ensuring that efforts are concentrated on the most prevalent crimes and criminals.

The Division is supported by a dedicated Scenes of Crime Officer. The officer attends and examines many crime scenes with a view to maximising opportunities for detecting crimes through the gathering of evidence from the scene. The type of evidence gathered can vary and can include fingerprints, footprints or fibres as well as DNA.

The Family Protection Unit and Domestic Abuse Officers are based at Bellevue, Arbroath. These officers are now co-located with colleagues from the Angus Council Social Work Child Protection team. The FPU officers are responsible for investigating crimes against children and also historical cases of physical and sexual abuse. The Domestic Abuse Officers work alongside a seconded member of staff from Barnardos. This joint work between Tayside Police and Barnardos is recognised as providing a pro-active service for victims of domestic abuse. The nature of the work requires that the unit works closely with other agencies and there are close links in Angus with the health services and particularly the Angus Council Social Work Child Protection team.
