Click here to request an application pack Currently there is no fitness test for Special Constables and this may continue. However it is a subject that is being discussed at national level and applicants to the Specials should seriously consider their level of fitness before applying as the role can be every bit as arduous as that faced by regular Police Officers. You can download a copy of the Police Officer fitness standards along with information on reaching the correct level of fitness from the ACPOS website. DUTIES AND REQUIREMENTS Specials, as they are known, take part in every aspect of police work learning new skills and meeting new challenges on a voluntary basis. Full training and uniform are provided free of charge and travelling expenses are paid. RECRUITMENT PROCESS The following process is applied to Special Constable recruitment. As with regular constables, applicants must fully complete the national application form and accompanying documentation. Convictions will be treated in the same way as with regulars and assessed on an individual basis. Minor offences may not exclude an application from proceeding, however it is extremely unlikely that a person with a serious conviction will be allowed to progress. INTERVIEW Applicants will attend a structured interview which will assess them against the competencies listed below. MEDICAL Any applicant successful at the interview stage must complete a medical prior to starting. Any queries regarding medical issues must be referred to the recruiting team who can pass it on to CIGNA if required. BACKGROUND CHECKS / REFERENCES Background checks will be carried out and references requested once the applicant has completed the interview stage. COMPETENCIES EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION The ability to communicate clearly, concisely and effectively both verbally and in writing. The ability to listen effectively. The ability to give and receive information in a positive and accurate manner. TEAMWORKING The ability to work with others in a constructive and supportive way to achieve Force objectives. DIVERSITY & COMMUNITY FOCUS The ability to treat people with fairness and dignity in respect of all members of the diverse community. PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY Honest with a mature outlook and socially aware. Can demonstrate assertiveness. RESILIENCE Is self disciplined, enthusiastic and motivated. Responds logically and decisively in demanding situations. PROBLEM SOLVING Able to take decisions in a manner appropriate to the situation and considering all relevant information.
