Primary Pupils Promote Road Safety in Perthshire

11-03-2010

Primary school children in Perthshire have been getting creative to spread the message about road safety outside their schools.

Irresponsible and unsafe parking is a common problem at many local schools, and Junior Road Safety Officers (JRSOs) attending a recent training day organised by the Tayside Police Road Safety Officers, were asked to create a banner slogan or design that could be displayed outside schools to deter parking on the zig-zags or at other inappropriate or dangerous places around schools in Perthshire.

Rachel Ewins, a Road Safety Officer with Tayside Police, said,

‘‘Lots of fantastic designs and slogans were received and, thanks to funding obtained from Perth and Kinross Council Roads Department several of the designs have now been selected to be printed up as banners which will be displayed outside the schools.’’

The Junior Road Safety Officers who created the six selected designs were invited to attend Tayside Police Divisional Headquarters in Perth today (11 March 2010) to receive a banner of their own design for use by their school, with an additional copy of each banner being made available for loan to other schools in the area.  The Junior Road Safety Officers were also presented with Halford vouchers from Donna Cromb, Sustainable Transport Assistant withPerth and Kinross Council, as a personal reward for their efforts to combat this problem.
