Police in Dundee are again highlighting to householders the need for them to consider their home security following a number of break-ins in the city.

Over the past two weeks, a total of 24 houses and 3 sheds or garages in Dundee have either been broken into or suffered an attempted break-in. The break-ins happened across the city and at various times although most occurred late afternoon or overnight.

Televisions, computer games, laptops, jewellery and cash were among the favourite targets for the thieves.

Colin Brough, Crime Prevention Officer for Dundee, said:

''In two of the attempted break ins, an alarm was activated and the perpetrators made off empty handed. This proves the worth of a house alarm as a very effective deterrent.

''Householders, who do not have a house alarm but would like to fit one, have different options available to them. These range from easy-to-fit DIY systems, suitable for a flat or small house, which can be bought for under £100 to professionally fitted systems.

''Alarms for sheds and garages are also a good idea. Low cost alarms are available from DIY stores and Dundee Community Safety Team. The Safety Team can be contacted on Dundee 436333.''

In addition to the break-ins, a further 10 householders suffered sneak-in thefts. Almost half of these occurred in the areas of West Kirkton and Ardler.

Colin Brough said:

''While I would encourage the use of alarms to protect a house, shed or garage, thieves regularly gain access to property through an unlocked door or window. In many instances, if householders follow some basic security measures, this will be sufficient to deter thieves.''

Householders are asked to consider the following to protect their property:

  • Ensure that you lock all windows and doors especially at night or when the house is not occupied
  • Check that all garages and sheds are secure
  • Keep a light on if going out – a timer is a good idea if out during the hours of darkness
  • Check to make sure neighbouring property is okay
  • Consider installing outside lighting

High visibility police patrols will continue during the hours of darkness and there will be continued use of mobile CCTV units.

Householders are urged to be vigilant and report any suspicious activity to the police. This can be done by contacting any police officer or calling the Force on 0300 111 2222. Information can also be passed to local community wardens or anonymously through Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
