Continuing to Reassure the Residents of Brechin and Arbroath

15-04-2008

Following the tragic events surrounding the death of Jolanta Bledaite, police officers in Angus are continuing in their efforts to provide reassurance to the communities of both Arbroath and Brechin.

Following the second appearance today at Forfar Sheriff Court of the two men charged with her murder, Chief Superintendent Alan Campbell, Divisional Commander of Eastern Division, was keen to reassure residents that the high policing presence will continue in both towns. He said,

''The death of Jolanta Bledaite shocked and saddened us all and my thoughts are firstly with her family and friends.

''Angus is a safe county. Indeed, it boasts the lowest recorded level of serious violent crime on the Scottish mainland. That said, we are never complacent and seek to ensure that everyone who lives, works or visits our towns feel both safe and are crime free.

''We will continue in our efforts to provide the reassurance our communities deserve and will work with our partners in Angus Council in forging the links with our migrant communities. By doing this we will understand better their needs and concerns which will assist in engendering the confidence to report matters to us.

''I want all of our migrant workers to know that any crime is unacceptable, and actively encourage them to report anything to us.  We understand that there may be language barriers, but feel assured as we have access to a range of official interpreters if necessary.''

Meanwhile, the mother of the two little girls who found Jolanta’s body parts on the beach in Arbroath wanted to thank the people of Angus for all their concern and support given to them during what has been a particularly difficult time.

The mum, who did not wish to be named, said,

''We very much want to move forward as a family and for the kid’s lives to return to normal as soon as possible. We understand that many people have considered a fund for the girls, but we would like to state that we have not and will not accept any funds being set up or monies donated. I feel I should also clarify that we have not had anything to do with the Marek Appeal, nor do we wish to be involved. Our thoughts, at this time, are very much with Jolanta’s family in Lithuania.''
