Formed in May 1975 after local government reorganisation, Tayside Police can trace its history back to the many small City, Burgh and County Constabularies that once policed Dundee, Angus and Perth & Kinross.

The following 'family tree' traces the force's roots back to the very early nineteenth century, with the earliest police forces being formed in the cities of Perth and Dundee in 1811 and 1824 respectively.
