South Section

Inspector Iain Ward is the senior officer in charge of this area

South Section is a large, mainly rural, area lying to the south and west of Perth. It extends from Bridge of Earn and Abernethy on the outskirts of Perth to the larger communities of Crieff, Kinross and Auchterarder. Officers are based at Crieff, Auchterarder and Kinross.

The area surrounding Crieff includes the smaller villages of Comrie, St Fillans and Muthill which run along the A85 road connecting Perth to Oban. The large influx of tourists to and passing through the area, particularly around Loch Earn and the National Park, provides a wide variety of police work for local officers, particularly during the summer months.

South Section borders Fife Constabulary and Central Scotland Police. Officers from all three forces work closely together to deter, disrupt and detect criminals involved in cross-border crime.

The most significant and well-known annual event in the section is the T in the Park music festival held at Balado, Kinross. Many months of planning and preparation go into the event involving Tayside Police, its emergency services and local authority partners, as well as the event's security staff. That attention to detail, allied to the good behaviour of the 85,000-plus revellers, helps to ensure the continued success of the festival.

The section has also previously accommodated the G8 Conference at Gleneagles Hotel in 2005, major golfing competitions and is looking forward to the challenges that hosting the 2014 Ryder Cup golf match between Europe and the USA will bring.
