East Section

Inspector Wayne Morrison is the senior officer in charge of this area.

East Section is a mainly rural area lying to the northeast of Perth and covers an area of approximately 530 square miles. The section includes Blairgowrie and the Carse of Gowrie. Officers are based at Blairgowrie and Longforgan.

The area around Blairgowrie and Rattray contains the villages of Alyth, Ardler, Balbeggie, Ballintuim, Bridge of Callay, Burrelton, Caputh, Collace, Coupar Angus, Guildtown, Kettins, Kinrossie, Kirkmichael, Meigle, Spittalfield and Wolfhill.

Blairgowrie is well known for producing soft fruit such as strawberries and rapsberries, and fruit picking during the summer months brings many casual workers from abroad to the area. The Blairgowrie area is also popular with tourists who are attracted by the local scenery and the numerous golf courses.

East Section includes a well-established ski centre and therefore attracts large numbers of visitors during the winter months. The A93 Perth to Braemar road, which carries the majority of skiers to the slopes at Glenshee is exposed in places and can be badly affected by drifting snow. These dangers are acknowledged and local contingency plans are regularly reviewed to ensure that skiers can be safely evacuated from the slopes if required.

The Longforgan area encompases the Carse of Gowrie which lies on the north bank of the River Tay between Perth and Dundee. It includes the communities of Abernyte, Errol, Glencarse, Inchture, Invergowrie, Kinfauns, Kingoodie, Longforgan and St Madoes.

Farming is the major industry in this area and similar to the Blairgowrie area, casual workers from abroad are attracted during the summer months to assist in the harvesting of crops.

This part of the section is divided by the A90, which forms part of the main east coast arterial route between Edinburgh and Aberdeen. This road carries a high volume of traffic and brings with it a variety of policing challenges.
