Officers in Perth are dedicated to specific beats. Through their consistent presence and interaction with the organisations, voluntary groups, businesses, schools and people in their dedicated area, they develop valuable insights into the respective communities. The Community Officers work hard to solve crime problems, particularly persistent issues, youth problems and repeat victims, which their foothold in the community makes them best-placed to deal with.
The extensive residential area of Perth are complimented by the thriving city centre which provides its own challenges in terms of retail crime and other issues inherent with a busy night-time economy of pubs and clubs. Again, the city centre is served by Community Officers supported by beat officers whose task is to create strong working relationships with the business and residential communities to deter theft and to create a safe environment for the public.
Perth hosts a number of major events during the year ranging from the regular farmers' markets in the High Street, to events, shows and displays on the Inches and streets. Scone Palace hosts an annual Game Fair among other events. Police officers are often supported at events by members of the Special Constabulary who elect to work regularly at Perth as their "home" beat.
St Johnstone Football Club has its ground on Crieff Road which hosts local and international matches for football and rugby, and these entail regular dedicated police attention. Similarly, Perth Racecourse offers the spectacle of a national horse racing venue and corporate hospitality, all of which can require a police presence.
As might be anticipated due to its population and urban nature, Perth is the busiest policing section in Western Division and the volume of incidents attended provides a challenging working environment for all officers.
The Perth area is at the heart of Scotland and major roads criss-cross the city which brings not only tourism and visitors but the challenges of the traveling criminal.
