Fraud

The investigation of most financial crime reported within the Tayside Police area predominately takes place at Divisional level, however, large and complex frauds are normally investigated by the Fraud Branch.

The Branch, which is part of the Operational Support Division, is based at Police Headquarters in Dundee and includes the Force Cheque and Credit Card Unit.

It consists of Detective officers and members of support staff who have received specialist training in the investigation of fraud and associated financial crimes.

Notable crimes investigated by the branch include Embezzlement, Mortgage Fraud, Advance Fee Fraud, Public Sector Corruption, Companies Act and Sequestration offences, Cheque/Credit Card Fraud, and Credit Card Skimming.

The Branch also provides a support role by being a source of guidance and assistance with regard to fraud related matters which are being investigated by uniform or CID officers at Divisional level.

The Fraud Branch has responsibility for the collation, monitoring and administration of all instances involving suspected counterfeit currency reported within the Force area. It acts as a single point of contact with the Serious Organised Crime Agency (SOCA) for all matters in relation to counterfeit currency.

The Branch also has responsibility for the collation, monitoring and administration of West African Letters, or "419" letters which have become a cottage industry in various countries in Africa. They are referred to as West African Letters having originated in Nigeria and other countries along the Gold Coast. They became known as "419" letters from the section number of the Nigerian Penal Code, which makes it an offence to send such letters. Although referred to as letters, the modern day approach is by way of email. Such letters try to trick the recipient into either disclosing details of their bank account or seeking advance funds with the fraudulent promise of returns.
