Variation Applications

Prior to a certificate holder acquiring a further firearm or replacing an existing firearm a variation must be applied for and granted.

To either acquire an additional firearm or to replace an existing firearm, you must complete a variation form.

The form is the same as for the grant or a renewal of a certificate however no photographs or referees are required for a variation. Parts A, B, C, D & F on the application must be completed. In question 19 on the application form you should state the calibre and type of firearm you wish to be authorised. It is not necessary to state the make or serial number of the firearm you wish to acquire.

If you wish to acquire an additional firearm, a fee is required. Cheques should be made payable to 'Tayside Joint Police Board'. The application form, fee and your certificate should be submitted directly to Firearms Administration. In some cases further enquiry may be necessary and accordingly the variation may not be granted immediately.

If you wish to replace an existing firearm (this is called a one for one variation), no fee is required provided the application is submitted within 7 days of the disposal of the existing firearm. The application form, your certificate and proof of disposal of the firearm you wish to replace should be submitted directly to Firearms Administration. In some cases further enquiry may be necessary. If, however, it is evident that the replacement firearm is of the same calibre and type as the firearm disposed of, and that it will be used for the same purpose on the same land as previously, the application may be processed without being allocated for enquiry.
