Security Devices

There are a number of different security devices available. Selecting the right one for you will depend on the type of vehicle you are securing and the level of security you require.

One of the key things to remember is that some security devices require you to either install or activate them each time you leave your vehicle. To be effective this will have to become part of your daily routine.

Please remember the following advice when considering a security device for your vehicle :

  • An alarm can put a car thief to flight when it activates but its presence can also deter a thief from interfering with your vehicle in the first place. To this end, devices are often accompanied by a red flashing light which draws attention to the presence of the alarm. Displaying a warning sticker on the vehicle can also help reinforce the message.
  • Since October 1998, all new cars have been fitted with electronic immobilisers preventing the vehicle from being driven without the key. If your vehicle does not have one, consider having one fitted.
  • A steering wheel lock can be a very effective deterrent. Use it every time you leave your vehicle.
  • Thieves often target tax discs and registration plates, so tamper proof products may be a good investment.
  • Thefts of fuel, particularly diesel, have increased recently and if your vehicle is not fitted with a good quality locking fuel cap, consider fitting one.
  • If your vehicle is particularly expensive or of great sentimental value you may also want to consider fitting an in-car tracking device.
