Out and About

Walking to work, school, the shops or when out socialising is part of everyday life and we should feel confident doing so. However, we need to be aware that there are those who may wish to steal our property or do us harm.

The following advice is designed to allow you to go about your business safely and with confidence :

  • When walking or jogging, face the oncoming traffic.
  • Stick to well-lit pavements, avoiding dark alleys and waste ground.
  • When carrying a bag, always ensure it is properly closed and carry it so that the opening is towards you.
  • When sitting down, keep your bag close by you and consider placing your foot or the leg of your chair through the bag strap.
  • If someone tries to snatch your bag do not confront them. Your safety is more valuable than the bag or its contents. Try to memorise a good description of the person and call the Police straight away, letting them know what the person looked like and what direction they were last seen travelling in.
  • Be aware of what is happening around you. If you are wearing headphones you may not hear what is going on.
  • If walking at night, consider wearing a fluorescent top or band.
