Look After Your Handbag

Remember the following advice to minimise the risk of you becoming the victim of a handbag snatch or purse theft :

  • Handbag snatches and purse thefts would appear to be on the increase across Tayside and we would urge people to be on their guard at all times.
  • Try not to over-burden yourself with bags or parcels and never leave your handbag unattended on the back of shopping trolleys or on top of pushchairs for instance. Try to make sure that your bag is secure. If it has a strap, wear it across your body with the openings facing inwards and no matter where you are, avoid placing it on the floor.
  • If you are carrying a purse or wallet don't carry large amounts of cash and hold it close to your body or keep it in a front pocket. Always remain aware of what is going on around you and keep your cash card separate from your cheque book or PIN.
  • Be wary of strangers who approach and engage you in conversation, they may have an accomplice who will take advantage of you being distracted and steal your bag or purse.
