Property Marking

Property is often recovered in circumstances which lead the Police to suspect that it is stolen but it can often be difficult to trace the rightful owner. Security marking is one way to help ensure that the Police can return your property to you.

Please follow the advice below :

  • Property can be marked using an ultra violet pen or by engraving the property itself.
  • Property should be marked with your postcode and your house number. If your home does not have a number use the first two letters of your house name.
  • Always mark the back or underside of items where they are less likely to be handled. If you move home, security mark all your items again.
  • Check the marking every 12 months to ensure it has not worn off and mark the item again if it has.
  • Items which cannot be marked by conventional means, such as jewellery, should be photographed. Place something next to the item to give an idea of scale (eg. a coin or small ruler) and keep the photographs in a safe place.
  • Keep a record of the full description of items of property (including, where applicable, make, model number and serial number). This can also assist the Police in tracing lost or stolen property as well as assisting with insurance claims.
