• Lighting is an important means of deterring criminals and external lights that are switched on and off by means of a passive infra red detector are commonly used. The detector ensures that lights are not illuminated at all times outwith working hours and also invokes a 'surprise' aspect, in that an intruder is suddenly bathed in a strong pool of light, causing him to consider whether he should remain on the premises or go somewhere else. However, if CCTV is to be installed it is likely that a constant light source is required to allow clear images to be recorded during the hours of darkness.
