Specialist Search Dogs
The force's specialist search dogs are Labradors, Springer and Cocker Spaniels and a German Wire Haired Pointer.
The specialist search drugs dogs are trained to search for the main categories of unlawful drugs and in addition they are trained to search for cash and weapons. We also have a number trained to scan and indicate people carrying unlawful drugs.
A further two of the specialist dogs are trained to search for explosives.
The length of initial training they undergo can vary depending upon the specialist role they are being trained for. All of these dogs will also undergo regular training and along with their handlers must also be relicensed anually.
