Charging for Policing Services
The Force makes charges for Police services provided at sporting events such as football matches, golf tournaments, horse racing meetings, etc. Charges are also made for attendance at festivals, game fairs, carnivals and providing assistance with census work, road surveys, etc.
In line with ACPOS Finance Management Business Area recommendations, the following hourly rates (exclusive of VAT) are charged with effect from 1 September 2010 :
Chief Superintendent - £83.25
Superintendent - £77.50
Chief Inspector - £58.75
Inspector - £55.50
Sergeant - £45.50
Constable - £38.75
Precognitions
A precognition is the face to face interview of a Police Officer or member of Police Staff who may be called to give evidence at a forthcoming criminal trial, Children's Panel, Fatal Accident Enquiry in respect of civil matters or in respect of insurance claims. It affords the opportunity to evaluate the evidence that the witness will give whilst under oath at the trial.
Precognitions are usually requested by:
Solicitors - as an opportunity to offer their client full advice on how best to respond to the charges they face as well as establishing the strength of the case against them.
Insurance companies and loss adjusters - allowing them to further explore the circumstances of a claim which they are dealing with.
Precognitions can also be requested by the Procurator Fiscal in relation to criminal proceedings. Tayside Police considers it has a duty to agree to such requests.
To request a precognition, solicitors and insurance companies should write to either :

For precognitions in criminal cases, solicitors should provide the following information :
- Name of accused
- Court date
- Police or Procurator Fiscal reference number
- Names of individuals to be precognosed
No charge will be levied for precognitions in criminal cases or Children's Panel.
For precognitions in civil cases, companies should provide the following information if they have it :
- Date/ locus of the incident
- Type of incident
- Names of those involved
- Reporting Officer
A fee of £135 will be levied in civil matters and precognitions can only be arranged once the criminal case (if any) has been disposed of by the Courts. Should the precognition request come from or via Motor Insurance Bureau, no fee will be levied.
On receipt of the letter, Tayside Police will contact the applicant and arrange a suitable appointment and communicate this to the officer concerned.
Provision of Reports
Tayside Police regularly receives requests from solicitors, insurance companies and individuals for road accident information and crime reports where property has been damaged or stolen.
There is no charge for road accident information if it is from someone who was involved in the accident. This includes the driver or owner of the vehicle, an injured passenger or pedestrian, or the owner of the damaged property.
Fees however do apply to all requests from solicitors and insurance companies. These figures are updated on a yearly basis - the current scale of charges is as follows :
