Promoting Equality and Protecting Human Rights for All - Our Commitment

Tayside Police is committed to the provision of a quality service that is fair, accessible, values difference and preserves and protects the rights of individuals to certain freedoms under the Human Rights legislation.

We realise that every police officer, special constable and member of police staff working for Tayside Police is responsible for delivering a fair and professional service, promoting equality for all. We also recognise that our communities are diverse and have a right to be treated in accordance with their needs and with respect and dignity. Therefore, our approach to promoting equality is broad with equality and diversity issues being debated and addressed through a variety of internal and external fora that involve management, staff, community members and multi-agency partners.

To that end, we are determined to ensure that equality and human rights issues are an integral part, not an afterthought, of all our decision-making and policy development processes. We also recognise our accountability to the public we serve and will continue to identify and address any inequalities/unfairness in our internal and external functions and engage with those most affected.

Furthermore, we accept that we not only have a moral obligation to promote equality but also a legal one.

The Equality Act 2010 places certain statutory duties on public bodies and protects people from discrimination on the grounds of age, disability, gender reassignment, pregnancy and maternity, race, religion or belief, sex and sexual orientation. For employment functions, it protects people in a Civil Partnership in addition to the other characteristics.

As such, understanding the different needs and demands of our diverse communities is seen as an important part of Tayside Police Vision which seeks to ‘put communities at the heart of everything we do’. We aim to deliver on this commitment and meet our equality duties, in respect of our internal and external functions, by proactively seeking to:

  • Eliminate discrimination, harassment, victimisation and any other unlawful conduct, so that our staff and customers are treated fairly, equally and with the respect and dignity that they have a right to expect

  • Advance equality of opportunity for all in employment and development so that our workforce reflects the diverse communities we serve

  • Foster good relations between different groups so that people from diverse communities live and work within a cohesive and well supported environment.

Our equality and diversity related documents are published here for your information. We encourage our service users to take an interest in what we do and inform and influence our policies and activities by providing feedback on an ongoing basis. This is how we can work together to create the kind of police service that you can have confidence in.

Reporting Hate Crime

Tayside Police takes hate crime very seriously and encourages members of all communities to report incidents to the police. Even if what happened does not amount to a crime then we will still record it for information and future reference.
