About the Force

Local Government reorganisation in 1975 created a new Tayside Region by the amalgamation of the previous three unitary authorities of Perth and Kinross Council, Dundee City Council and Angus Council. Police forces that previously existed within these areas were amalgamated into the newly formed Tayside Police who assumed responsibility for the provision of policing services for the newly created Tayside Region.

In April 1996 a further bout of local government reorganisation saw Tayside Region broken up and split into the three unitary authority areas that existed prior to the reorganisation of 1975. Location of council areas that make up Tayside

Tayside Police was not however subjected to further reorganisation at this time and to date remain responsible for the provision of policing services throughout the Angus, Dundee City and Perth and Kinross council areas, with all three councils contributing to the policing budget.

Tayside Police's purpose is to

  • Uphold the law fairly and firmly
  • Protect life and property
  • Preserve order
  • Prevent crime and detect offenders
  • Reassure the public through the provision of a high quality service that offers advice, assistance and protection to everyone in the community.

Tayside Police operates within a geographical area of some 2,896 square miles (7,497 square kilometers) and serves approximately 388,000 people. Our service is provided against a backdrop of densely populated urban areas and sparsely populated rural areas.

Formed in 1975 Tayside Police maintains 24/7 cover from 27 police stations situated throughout the Angus, Dundee and Perth and Kinross areas.

On average every year we deal with over 400,000 telephone calls - of which 50,000 will be "999" calls - and we respond to almost 200,000 incidents.

Operating a fleet of around 250 vehicles Tayside Police patrols a road network of approximately 5000 miles.
